Used purchase, gmail locked out, help, please

I'm asking for a friend that is helping someone with an ebay purchase of a boost stylo that they didn't get and can't get the email address and password to unlock.
Is it possible to just flash a tot on top and put in a new account? I mean as long as the esn is clean? this question has floated around me a few times and I'm planning on buying a used G5 or V10 and don't want to get burned either. Any info appreciated, Thanks johnm
