Firstly, what app are you using to read the word file? Is the capable of editing, or is it just a viewer?

Secondly, where on the device did you store the file? On many recent Android versions non-system apps cannot by default write to SD (real SD, not internal storage), and if your office app isn't written to request write permission you would not be able to edit a file on the removable SD card. In this case, try moving the word file to internal storage and see if you can edit it then.

Otherwise, what are the file permissions (use any decent file manager, select the file and look at "details" or "properties")? It may be that when you copied the file over it was set as being owned by something other than your user account. Making a copy and editing that may be the simplest solution in that case.
